Résumé

Objectifs : Mieux comprendre les expériences émotionnelles et mentales des enfants et des adolescents sportifs à la suite d'une commotion cérébrale liée au sport, afin de mieux soutenir ces athlètes tout au long de leur rétablissement.

Méthodes : Des adolescents (n=21) âgés de 15 à 24 ans qui ont rapporté avoir subi une commotion cérébrale liée au sport avant l'âge de 18 ans ont participé à une analyse qualitative rétrospective basée sur des entretiens semi-dirigés à groupe unique. L'Analyse Thématique de Contenu a été utilisée pour identifier les thèmes parmi les réponses des participants.

Résultats : Les résultats ont indiqué trois domaines principaux avec des thèmes et sous-thèmes sous-jacents : (1) Défis sévères après la commotion (c.-à-d., difficulté à faire face à l’inconnu, image de soi et reconnaissance de sa valeur, école, rater des choses et isolement, sentiments de désespoir), (2) Faire face aux défis sévères après la commotion (c.-à-d., soutien, commotions antérieures, prioriser la santé mentale), et (3) Retombées après la commotion (c.-à-d., apprentissage sur les blessures, croissance personnelle, impacts à long terme sur la santé globale).

Conclusion : Les enfants et les adolescents sportifs sont confrontés à de nombreux défis émotionnels à la suite d'une commotion cérébrale et de leur rétablissement; cependant, les jeunes sont résilients et font face à ces défis de différentes manières.

Implications : Il est essentiel que la connaissance des défis auxquels sont confrontés les enfants et les adolescents sportifs à la suite d’une commotion cérébrale, ainsi que les mécanismes d'adaptation efficaces et les facteurs de protection utilisés tout au long de la récupération, soient pris en considération pour élaborer de meilleures stratégies de prévention et d'intervention, afin de soutenir le bien-être des athlètes à la suite d’une commotion cérébrale.
